Going Paperless: Vornado's Document Management ProgramVornado continues making strides in our implementation of sustainable best practices, including practices through its I.T. department. Over the past five years, Todd Januzzi, VP of Applications in Vornado's Information Technology department, has spearheaded Vornado's Document Management Program.
Through the program, Vornado employees register paper documents by assigning each document a unique identification number and "bar code" for tracking. These documents are sent to the Scan / Record center, where they are scanned and uploaded into the secure management system. After scanning, the paper document is shredded and recycled. The Document Management Program is successful for several reasons. Firstly, the Program alleviates employees of the time and space needed to manually record and file documents. Secondly, authorized employees across the company may access documents electronically, eliminating the need to make photocopies. Finally, the system has generated awareness for paper conservation among its users; as use of the system grows, so does Vornado's total conservation. Currently, Vornado's Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Lease Administration departments are actively using the Document Management Program to store vital documents. Our Washington, DC office has committed to an online folder system, and plans are underway for the New York Office to follow suit. The Document Management Program continues to be an essential part of Vornado's companywide sustainable initiatives. Sustainability Snapshot: Carnelian Room Reclamation Project
Vornado's team at 555 California Street in San Francisco has successfully completed the reclamation and salvage project at the former Carnelian Room restaurant. After 40 years of business, the Carnelian Room closed its doors, leaving behind a trove of elegant oak paneling, wine racks, mirrors, and doors for the taking. Together, the 555 California property team and Ohmega Salvage Company of Berkeley, CA, worked to carefully remove these priceless materials from the site for re-use in future construction. After over a week of labor and precision work, the company was able to retrieve 7,600 pounds of materials from the site, which is now available for resale to private or commercial end users. This reclamation effort was part of the more comprehensive demolition of the space, which included the recycling of over seventy percent of additional non-hazardous materials. By preventing the waste of potentially useful materials and reducing the consumption of fresh raw materials, this recycling and reclamation project is a prime example of ways to reduce systemic energy usage. Congratulations to our team at 555 California Street for this very impressive accomplishment.
