MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
CHANGE THE WORLD, START WITH ENERGY STAR

As part of our ongoing commitment to energy reduction, Vornado/Charles E. Smith has joined forces with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the fight against climate change by partnering with ENERGY STAR's Change the World, Start with Energy Star program.

This program encourages the use of simple conservation techniques and the use of energy-efficient lighting, appliances and equipment in the workplace and in our homes. Vornado is committed to this program and we encourage our tenants to join our efforts. We invite each of you to participate and to share it with friends and family. TENANT LEED SPACE: FEATURING WINROCK INTERNATIONAL AT 2121 CRYSTAL DRIVE, ARLINGTON, VA

Winrock International's new headquarters at 2121 Crystal Drive is designed as LEED CI Silver.

The approximately 27,500 SF space offers a number of sustainable features including:

-Natural light exposure on all building facades which reduces energy usage.
-Low-VOC products and materials which offer better air quality.
-High efficiency HVAC systems which offer 15% less lighting power consumption.
-Green housekeeping practices provide environmentally friendly approach to cleaning.
-Bike racks within the office promote alternative commuting.
-Sorted recycling throughout the space encourages conservation.
-Highly efficient flourescent lighting fixtures save resources.

All materials used on this project were sourced locally, and 75% of the construction waste was recycled after demolition.

Additionally, the space was designed using the following LEED materials:

Bamboo and linoleum flooring

Cork surfaces

Recycled content carpet

The space was designed by OTJ Architects and overseen by Vornado/Charles E. Smith with the goal of constructing a fresh new green facility for Winrock International and its employees. We congratulate Winrock International on their expected LEED CI Silver rating!

What's Happening Now

Vornado Buildings Beat The Heat, Save Energy

Vornado Building Beat The Heat, Save Energy

Vornado/Charles E. Smith continues to raise the bar in our commitment to energy conservation. Through our partnership with Constellation Energy, we are modulating the power we use in response to severe weather events.

During the triple-digit heat wave we experienced this summer, grids on the eastern seaboard were severely strained by demand for cooling. The Tenant Service Center responded by reducing energy consumption by 3.1 megawatts. That's enough savings to power 100 houses for a week and potentially save some homes from a complete black-out. These reductions were made without impact to tenant operations or comfort.

We not only save energy and reduce grid pressure, but we extend the life of our existing power plants, reducing the need to build more power stations and facilities. With a commitment to making these kinds of emergency reductions up to 10 times a year, the energy savings and pressure taken off of regional energy grids can be significant: Enough power saved to run 1,000 houses for 1 week!

To us, the program sets a new bar for responsible energy management, allowing us to not only save energy for ourselves and our tenants, but to have a measurable impact on our communities especially during energy "crisis" periods.

Working Green @ 2101 L Street Through Alternative Commuting

Working Green @ 2101 Through Alternative Commuting

We were delighted to learn from a survey our tenants at 2101 L Street that nearly 70% commuted to work using alternative transportation methods - such as walking, biking, carpooling, or taking Metro.

The building is home to the US Green Building Council, Greenberg Traurig, RTKL, Cassidy Turley, American Insurance Association, and other tenants, who clearly have made sustainability a way of life.

2101 L Street has also applied for LEED certification in the Existing Building (EB) category by USGBC, the US Green Building Council. We hope to be awarded this certification by the end of the year.
